Prepare yourself for the journey before you travel. Explore authentic guides, recommended books and trusted learning resources based upon the Qur'an and Sunnah.
Hajj and Umrah are sacred acts of worship that require physical, financial, and above all, spiritual preparation. Seeking sound knowledge is a vital part of preparing for this journey, helping you perform the rites correctly as taught by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
At Hajj Gateway, we encourage prospective pilgrims to learn directly from authentic sources, attend scholarly seminars, and consult qualified scholars to answer specific religious and jurisprudence questions.
This page is intended as a learning guide and should not replace studying with qualified scholars.
A concise, authentic walkthrough of the essential rites of Umrah.
Purify yourself, wear the designated Ihram sheets (for men) or modest clothing (for women) at or before the Miqat boundary, and form the intention for Umrah.
Chant the Talbiyah with devotion upon entering Ihram and continue reciting it during your travel until you reach the Haram boundary to begin Tawaf.
Circumambulate the Holy Kaaba counter-clockwise seven times, starting from the Hajr al-Aswad (Black Stone), reciting du'a and dhikr throughout.
Upon completing Tawaf, pray two Rak'ah behind Maqam Ibrahim (Station of Abraham) if possible, or anywhere within the Masjid al-Haram.
Walk seven times back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah, starting from Safa and ending at Marwah, remembering Hajar's search for water.
Shave the head (Halq) or cut the hair evenly (Taqsir) to break your Ihram constraints. Shaving is highly recommended for men; women clip a fingertip's length.
There are three valid forms of Hajj. Understanding these helps clarify the ritual intents.
The pilgrim enters Ihram with the sole intention of performing Umrah during the Hajj season. After completing Umrah, the pilgrim exits Ihram fully, wearing regular clothes. On the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah, a new Ihram is worn to start Hajj.
The pilgrim enters Ihram with the joint intention of performing Umrah and Hajj together. The pilgrim completes Umrah first but remains in the state of Ihram continuously without releasing it, proceeding to perform the Hajj rites in the same Ihram.
The pilgrim enters Ihram with the sole intention of performing Hajj only. No Umrah is included in this option. The pilgrim stays in the state of Ihram continuously until completing the core rituals of Hajj, including stoning and cutting hair on Eid day.
Recommendation Note: For most pilgrims travelling from Bangladesh through organised Hajj packages, Tamattu' is generally the form performed. Your Hajj guide will explain the practical details and any exceptions.

Put on your Hajj Ihram sheets at your place of accommodation in Makkah, pray two Rak'ah if possible, and make your intention for Hajj.
Keep your mind focused on devotion and begin reciting Talbiyah from this moment.
Recite "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk..." acknowledging Allah's invite with sincere devotion and submission.
Men raise their voices moderately, while women recite softly to themselves.
Circumambulate the Holy Kaaba seven times starting from the Black Stone. (For Qiran/Ifraad forms; Tamattu' pilgrims do this earlier during Umrah).
Avoid pushing or rushing. Make sincere supplications throughout each circle.
Walk seven lengths back and forth between Safa and Marwah, commemorating the devotion and survival story of Hajar.
Recite prayers at the top of Safa and Marwah facing the Qiblah.
Travel to the tent city of Mina, where you will pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr, shortening the 4-Rak'ah prayers to 2, but not combining them.
Spend this time in Dhikr, reciting the Qur'an, and resting to prepare for Arafah.
Proceed to Arafah. Pray Dhuhr and Asr combined and shortened during the Dhuhr time, and spend the afternoon making sincere Du'a (Wuquf).
This is the most critical day of Hajj. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "Hajj is Arafah." Seek forgiveness with absolute humility.
After sunset, travel to Muzdalifah. Pray Maghrib and Isha combined and shortened upon arrival, and spend the night sleeping under the open sky.
Collect small pebbles here to prepare for stoning the Jamarat (usually 49 or 70 pebbles).
After Fajr prayer at Muzdalifah, travel back to Mina to continue the rituals of the Day of Eid.
Pace yourself physically as this day contains multiple physical rituals.
Stone the Jamarat al-Aqabah (the largest pillar) on the 10th with seven pebbles, chanting "Allahu Akbar" with each throw. Stone all three pillars on the 11th and 12th.
Follow group directions and avoid throwing sandals or large stones.
Arrange the sacrificial slaughtering of a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. Most pilgrims arrange this through trusted vouchers or agencies.
This sacrifice is mandatory for Tamattu' and Qiran Hajj performers.
Shave or cut your hair. Once done, you enter the partial release from Ihram (Tahal-lul al-Asghar), allowing normal clothing except marital relations.
After this, you may shower and wear regular fresh clothes in Mina.
Before leaving Makkah to return to your home country, perform a final Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada') around the Kaaba as your last act in Makkah.
After completing this Tawaf, you should depart from Makkah promptly without delay.
The geographical journey and movement track followed during Hajj.
The route begins in Makkah, travels to Mina, moves to Arafah on the 9th, stays overnight in Muzdalifah, returns to Mina for stoning and sacrifice, and completes with the farewell circumambulation back in Makkah.
